    Through hands-on, inquiry-based learning, the College of Natural Sciences (https://www.gcu.edu/college-of-natural-sciences) provides an outlet for innovation and cross-disciplinary exposure. It also features pre-professional degrees in biology, alongside our degrees in microbiology, physics, and a forensic science and exercise science program.

    This is a face-to-face part time opportunity. MUST be available to come to the main campus.

    This position is a part-time Teaching Assistant position.

    Course: Nutrition and Wellness

    This is an introductory course in general nutrition and wellness, including the definitions of fitness and health, and review of fundamental nutritional principles. This course provides for a basic understanding of nutritional science and applications to food selection and overall health and wellness.

    Responsibilities:

    To assist, under direct supervision of certified teachers and specialists, in the monitoring and instruction of special education students implementing the Individual Education Plans; to assist students in performing their academic, daily living and health care activities; to relieve teacher of routine clerical tasks.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Associate’s Degree or 60 college credit hours required at time of hire OR pass the ParaPro Test provided by the district
    Ability and willingness to work with special education students who may require specialized instruction to meet academic, social, and behavior goals
    Ability to work well with students, staff and parents; good verbal and written communication skills

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Deliver, under teacher’s direction, classroom work/homework and/or reinforce classroom objectives, tutoring and guided practice
    Assist the development of instructional materials and maintenance of classroom
    Assist in the collection of data on academic and behavior goals as instructed
    Implement positive behavior intervention plans for students who display challenging behaviors including verbal and physical aggression
    Respond to problem behaviors according to the student’s positive behavior intervention plan and district crisis intervention policy
    Transfer and/or lift non-ambulatory students to assist them in the performance of their daily activities
    Assist students with personal hygiene to provide for and/or develop students’ daily living activities and behavioral skills
    May be occasionally required to assist students who need support in addressing personal care needs due to a severe medical condition and/or physical limitations (i.e. toileting, feeding, dressing suctioning, etc) to ensure their functioning in a school environment
    Accompany students as they transition across campus
    Monitor individual and/or small student groups in classroom and/or on the playground to maintain a safe and positive learning environment; facilitate social peer interactions
    Maintain classroom and student equipment to ensure a safe environment
    Model professional, safe, responsible and respectful behavior
    Perform general clerical tasks to support the teacher in the maintenance of student files and to provide classroom materials

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The Inclusion Assistant assists the Special Education and General Education Teachers with instruction and medically relevant support for students with educational disabilities. This position assists with academic and functional curriculum and may provide adult support with daily living skills,  behavioral support, reinforcement of school-based therapy goals, and vocational skills.  Inclusion Assistants work at multiple sites throughout the District and may provide supports and services for students while engaged in community-based instruction and job skills development. 
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    -Assists teacher in implementation of students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs);
    -Provides direct health services and support to students with seizures, tracheotomy suctioning and changing, respiratory support, “G” tube feedings (bolus and continuous), supported oral motor functioning for eating, catheterization, medication administration (oral and “G” tube), --CPR and First Aide;
    -Provides direct assistance with daily living skills (including hygiene, toileting; feeding);
    -Monitors student safety and provides appropriate supports and interventions as outlined by teacher/case manager/administrator/nurse or health assistant;
    -Implements (under guidance and direction of certified teacher) functional and meaningful instructional adaptations and accommodations;
    -Assists and supports students with augmentative communication systems (low/high tech, Braille, sign language, etc.);
    -Obtains and implements in-depth knowledge (through training) of positioning, standing, walking, transferring methods, and individualized school-based physical and occupational therapy routines;
    -Implements de-escalation and/or crisis intervention techniques;
    Supports implementation of positive behavioral intervention procedures;
    -Transports and provides instructional supports to students in community-based instruction sites as directed by teacher and using SUSD vehicle; 
    -Assists in implementation of supported work assessments and vocational training plans;
    -Collects data to meaningfully assess individual student goals and objectives, communicating regularly with case manager/teacher;
    -Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students, peers, families, related-service providers, District personnel, community members, and outside service agencies;
    -Models people first language;
    -Assists teacher in preparing supplies and materials needed for instruction;
    -Supports student engagement in classroom instructional activities (to include special education and general education environments);
    -Performs other related tasks as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    A.  REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
    -Arizona Fingerprint Clearance (at time of employment)
    -High School Diploma or equivalent;
    -Associate’s degree, 60 hours of college credit, or evidence of passing
    score on approved paraprofessional exam (must be submitted prior
    to employment);
    -American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR, First-
    -Aid/AED certification required prior to employment;
    -Valid Arizona driver’s license.
    -Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Non-Violent Crisis Intervention -
    Training (within 6 months of employment and provided by SUSD)
