Summary This temporary position is located at Kayenta Service Unit, Division of Nursing Services, Primary Care Branch, Family Medicine Unit, Kayenta, Arizona. The purpose of this position is to provide initial patient screening, registration, and administrative services by assisting with direct patient care that involves specialized medical procedures of a routine nature according to established clinical protocol. Incumbent reports to Supervisory Nurse in the Outpatient Department. Responsibilities This position is being re-advertised to solicit additional applications. The incumbent: Direct patient care (screening clinic patients - obtaining patient histories; taking vital signs of temperature, height, weight, blood pressure, respirations, and 02 saturations; preparing charts; preparing for medical examinations; seating/placing patients in patient room and record patient information per unit policy). Perform routine specialized procedure (venipuncture, injections, intravenous cannulation to collect specimen, electrocardiograms and sterile dressing changes according to established protocols and place adaptors of saline locks, venipuncture, and finger sticks to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing as needed) and obtain results. Assists with sterile procedures of sutures, spinal taps, pelvic exams and physical exams and clean procedures of cast application as requested by the physicians. Maintain/assist with cleaning exam rooms between patients, wipes down equipment. Maintains and assists with patient referrals. Prepares transfer and transport packets. Contacts noncompliant patients by phone, mail, or Public Health Nursing referral methods. Maintains a courteous and a professional manner and appearance with internal and external customer in accordance with established protocols. Answers phone and provide routine information as needed according to established unit guidelines. Participates in the maintenance of clinical records; adheres to HIPAA and Privacy Act. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Minimum Qualifications: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR, Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. GS-5 Specialized experience include recording patients' medical history, vitals, assist with sterile procedures, perform patient education, etc. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). Education There are no education requirements. Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) and E.O. 14043, IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Your Human Resources Specialist will provide a list of documents acceptable as vaccination proof and instructions on how to submit your vaccination documentation or how to request a medical or religious exemption, if needed. Work involves long periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, and lifting of heavy and/or disabled patients out of wheelchairs and onto or off the exam tables/beds and stretchers and use of computers. Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 240 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
