Summary The position is located at the Whiteriver Indian Hospital, located in Whiteriver, Arizona. The employee performs protective services work in guarding federally owned or leased buildings and property, protecting government equipment and material and controlling access to the facilities. On-call hours or standby duty may be required. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position. Responsibilities Distributes and balances workload among employees. Instructs employees in specific tasks and provides on the job training to new Security Guards. Patrols hospital grounds and living quarters, checking locks, alarms, fences, gates and other barriers. Patrols buildings to prevent theft or damage to federal property equipment, tools and supplies. Monitors alarm systems, closed circuit televisions systems, telephone and radio networks. Relays messages, maintains logs, and dispatches personnel and equipment to meet emergency situations. Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Note: Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veteran's preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. Investigation of Fitness: A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Such investigations will be conducted under the security requirements of the hiring agency. Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0085-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least 1 (one) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life; locking doors and gates of entrances and exits to secure federal buildings; answering alarms and investigating disturbances; monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure of employees, visitors, patients and other persons; patrolling premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion; circulating among visitors, patients, or employees to preserve order; responding to medical emergencies, bomb threats, fire alarms, or intrusion alarms, following emergency response procedures; training subordinate security officers in rules and procedures; communicating security status, updates, and actual or potential problems; and providing leadership to subordinate security officers. Training: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience at the GS-4 level on a month-for-month basis. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Education There are no education requirements. Additional Information Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 240 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. This position has no promotion potential.
